What is a Psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) who, after completing four years of college and four years of medical school, has completed four additional years of specialty training through a residency program in psychiatry. During residency, Psychiatrists are trained in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, including therapy. They are also typically exposed to a wide variety of hospitals and treatment settings to ensure they are competent and prepared to assess and treat a wide variety of patient populations. During their residency, Psychiatrists also spend time training in sub-specialties of psychiatry such as child & adolescent, addiction, eating disorders, forensic, consult-liaison, Med-Psych (medically complex patients with psychiatric conditions), geriatric psychiatry and dementia care & emergency psychiatry. As a part of training, psychiatric residents also must complete several months of training in neurology, internal medicine and emergency medicine to build a sound foundation of understanding in these specialties which often overlap with psychiatry or psychiatric presentations.
As physicians, psychiatrists are licensed to prescribe medications, and are extensively training in psychopharmacology. During their outpatient training, psychiatrists also receive a significant amount of training in psychotherapy (“talk-therapy”, CBT, ACT, DBT, grief-work, psychodynamic, etc). Throughout residency, psychiatric residents are trained and supervised by board-certified psychiatrists who ensure that residents are competent in all areas of training.
At the end of their 4 year residency program, a psychiatrist can become board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and continues medical education throughout his or her career to maintain that certification.
In brief, a psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses, including substance abuse/addiction and eating disorders. Psychiatrists are trained to assess the mental, emotional & physical aspects of psychological disturbance, which allows them to make an accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan. A psychiatrist has the authority to prescribe medications to patients, but a psychologist or therapist cannot.

What does your name mean?
We wanted our name to be a complete picture of the care we provide. Meah – pronounced Me-ah, is a Latin derivative of the word for “mine”. As in mine, or my life. We want to empower our patients to take ownership of their journey to mental wellness and take back the control of their life as they work to overcome their mental health symptoms.
Modern Psychiatry is just that – Modern. The challenges we face in the world today are drastically different than generations before us. Illnesses like anxiety and depression are at an all-time high, and rates continue to climb each year. These numbers show us that we must modernize our approach to the evaluation and treatment of mental health symptoms. We believe in incorporating time-proven treatments with cutting edge new technology and treatments to help you overcome the issues you face. Modern times call for a modern approach.

Do you offer Ketamine Treatment?
Yes we do. For the right person, ketamine has been proven in many controlled studies to be very effective for treatment of certain mental health symptoms. At Meah we have developed and refined our own protocol for utilizing ketamine as a treatment option. Our protocol offers the same proven effects of ketamine, but with less risks than other ketamine treatments.
We developed a protocol that minimizes risks, such as infection or infiltration, and reduces the pain and discomfort of a ketamine infusion. Our process makes receiving this treatment very easy and more comfortable for you, while still getting great results. Your Doctor can talk extensively about this and many other treatment options that we offer at Meah.
